The British Government’s horizon for “Global Britain” seeks to restore Britain’s greatness as a maritime tradition. However, this perspective is not in line with geostrategic realities. For example, the importance of The European Union has been neglected.
It seems that the Johnson administration should continue to fight for permanent Brexit, but this approach undermines Britain’s capacity to work with the EU on foreign and security policy.
BREXIT OUTCOMES FOR BRITAIN
By leaving the European Union, Britain freed itself from the strict rules of the European Union. But the Brexit had consequences for the country.
The United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU, the single market and the Customs Union, created barriers to trade and cross-border exchanges that did not exist before 1 January 2021.
Brexit caused the emigration of many citizens of the country, which resulted in a shortage of workforce and widespread protests against the lack of necessities such as food, medicine, gasoline, etc.
Brexit dealt a significant blow to the country’s economy. The implementation of this plan caused many countries, especially the European Union, to limit their economic and trade exchanges with this country.
Brexit has raised the cost of living and increased unemployment.
GLOBAL BRITAIN
After Britain withdrew from the European Union and declared its independence, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that after Brexit, this withdrawal might hurt this country’s credit in various ways such as political, economic, geopolitical, etc. Therefore, this country presented a plan called “Global Britain”.
The purpose of this plan by Boris Johnson was to maintain the country’s prestige, power, and influence and be an independent and influential country in political, strategic, military, and economic fields.
Now Britain is making every effort to achieve a permanent Brexit. Still, it seems to have gradually diminished its relations with the EU, which could be to the detriment of Britain and its ambitious goals of ultimately achieving the “Global Britain” plan and returning to its former glory.
WAYS FOR ARRIVE GLOBAL BRITAIN
- The British Government must strengthen its defence, strategy, and economic development to return to its greatness before establishing its “Global Britain” in the World.
- Britain must work with its allies and must not overlook the importance of this relationship.
- Britain must listen to the view of its people and provide a solid structure around which to build Global Britain.
Britain for integrate review and future foreign policy should:
- Have an active role in developing foreign policy
- Organize a coherent strategic response to the global erosion of liberal democracy
- Support international mechanisms that defend and promote democratic and human rights
- 4-remain its relationship with the EU and US
- Ensure that the institutional structures and all available policy tools, including trade policy, can support this agent
Relationship with European Union
The UK’s strategic and economic ties with the European Union will reduce the costs of implementing the Brexit plan and pave the way for the UK’s ambitious global project of “Global Britain”.
Because European countries are one of the main allies of Britain, it seems that Britain is not aware of the importance of this issue, and it just does its best to withdraw entirely from relations with EU member states. But this perspective does not correspond at all to the geostrategic realities.
It seems that the Johnson administration must continue its efforts for permanent Brexit, but it does not pay attention to strengthening its relationship with the EU. In this way, this approach could lead to a reduction in Britain’s capacity to cooperate with the EU in foreign policies and security areas.
CONCLUSION
As stated in the article, Britain wants to achieve its dream of glory by implementing the “Global Britain”. ]t has no choice but to strengthen its political, economic and strategic relations with its allies, mainly EU member states, because otherwise, it seems impossible for this country to achieve all the great hopes and aspirations it has in its head.
