Is Johnson’s Time Over on 10 Downing Street?

bj

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson struggles to assert himself as a serious and competent leader amidst a disastrous Covid-19 campaign from his office. The country’s standing on the world stage is taking a far-reaching blow, making its senior-most leadership essentially a global laughing stock. Not long ago, Boris Johnson secured his party the most considerable Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher’s in 1987, allowing him the opportunity to drive Britain out of the European Union. Currently, the Prime Minister is looking to end the recent restrictions imposed to tackle the spread of COVID-19, devastating the whole country in the form of the Omicron strain.

The upheaval generated by his rule-breaking booze parties has triggered a far-reaching response of unbridled anger towards Boris Johnson and his government. The Public and the Parliament are seen not to allow the Prime Minister and his Downing Street associates to disregard the same rules of social distancing, mask mandates and vaccine passports, which they have imposed upon the millions of British commoners. Although Prince Andrew’s lawsuit of sexual assault in the United States of America has been able to deflect some of the attention from Prime Minister’s misdoings, it is not the image that his country Britain wants to portray to the world.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Rule-breaking Scandal Is Serious Breach Of Trust

Considering his office’s role, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s behaviour hasn’t been ideal, to say the least, as he has been continuously lying about holding private parties amidst the country’s strict lockdown. Since the March of 2020, when Boris Johnson first announced the lockdown and social distancing rules, his government has been levying fines and punishment on anyone seen breaking his administration’s mandate.

However, when Boris Johnson was asked about a photo taken in May 2020 inside Downing Street garden, in which Prime Minister himself is seen with his staff enjoying wine and fine food, he dismissed the allegations of the covid-19 breach as nothing but “work.” The garden party was the first of the many parties, which were hosted and organized on downing Street under Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s watch, some of which he has himself attended with his wife if inside sources are to be believed.

Even on the night before Prince Philip’s funeral, two parties were organized by Downing Street staff, one of which was held for then Prime Minister’s Director of Communications. Since the leak, Boris Johnson’s office had issued an apology to Queen Elizabeth II for organizing the leaving party when the entire nation was mourning the loss of her husband, Prince Philip.

Dominic Cummings Has Become Boris Johnson’s Biggest Adversary

In the middle of all this controversy is Prime Minister’s former aide and senior adviser Dominic Cummings, who has become the leading witness against Boris Johnson. Dominic Cummings left Boris Johnson’s government on bad terms in November 2020. He has been lately waging a personal war against him, declaring publicly that he warned his former boss again and again against the breach of the Covid Rules on Downing Street. However, Johnson has been fighting against Dominic’s vendetta by repeatedly making claims that his private parties were only work-related events, categorically denying all the allegations made by his former chief aide. If it is determined that Boris Johnson has misled his Parliament and his Public with his contradictory statements, he will face the wrath of both.

Boris Johnson’s Fate Is In The Hands Of A Civil Servant

The scandal of Booze Parties on Downing Street amidst strict Covid-19 has prompted an investigation by senior civil servant Sue Gray, who will inspect and inquire about the damaging allegations faced by the Prime Minister.

Dominic Cummings will be the main witness of the internal inquiry of Sue Gray, who will have to take the evidence presented by him into account. Dominic Cummings has been very vocal about Boris Johnson’s misadventures, as he is even ready to testify against the prime minister under oath. Suppose the internal inquiry of Sue Gray establishes that Prime Minister has been lying the whole time. In that case, he will face severe repercussions from the blowback, and he may have to resign from his post in ignominy.

Fault Lines In Boris Johnson’s Party Are Deeper Than Ever

The main opposition Labour party is leading the charge against Boris Johnson, claiming to be an arrogant and incompetent leader who will ultimately drown in his deceit. Even some of the Prime Minister’s party members are calling him publicly to quit his office in public welfare, and many more are reported to have called for his resignation in private as well.

Every passing day, the calls for Prime Minister’s resignation are getting louder, with Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross and other senior backbenchers asking him to stand down from his post. Boris Johnson’s leadership is looming under severe pressure, even though Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee, hasn’t yet revealed how many letters he received against him. Most of the MPs are currently waiting for Sue Gray’s internal inquiry to come up with a verdict for them to decide the next course of action. Until Sue Gray’s investigation is complete, the fate of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s future in the highest British office hangs in the balance in the court of public opinion.

Conclusion

However, it is sure that if Boris Johnson is found guilty of lying to his public and his parliament, he would be under the ministerial code asked to resign from his post. The finance minister Rishi Sunak, who is expected to take over the leadership role from Boris Johnson, said so in an interview, revealing to the media that “the ministerial code is clear on these matters”. The Prime Minister has almost lost his public and parliamentary support, and it’s clear as day that it is the end of the road for him.

Boris Johnson hasn’t been able to reassure the British public that he can handle the pandemic fiasco and the rising cost of living. And the allegation that he faces has made his case to stay on the Prime Ministerial chair even worse. Turbulent days are ahead of him, and he seems too fretful and agitated to get the fire of dissent around him under control.

Recent poll numbers from the YouGov survey indicates that 40% of those who voted conservative to elect him as Prime Minister want him to resign. In comparison, 63% of the general population believe that he should give up his post as soon as possible. Although he is ready to take responsibility for the mishandling of the Covid-19 threat, the public is not inclined to give him a free pass when tens of thousands of people have already unnecessarily died. The rage of general people against his creed of the privileged class is immense and apparent because the sense of entitlement and double standards of his tribe of hypocrites is sickening to them. The public and the parliament both don’t see him fit to run the country’s affairs. Under fire for his behaviour and performance, a tide of growing resentment against the Prime Minister is coming. It will almost certainly cost him his job, no matter how far he will go to apologize for his mistakes and acknowledge his failures.
