Liz Truss resigns: Conservative power crisis

Liz Truss resigns: Conservative power crisis

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 20: Liz Truss speaks in Downing Street, with husband Hugh O'Leary, as she resigns as Prime Minister Of The United Kingdom on October 20, 2022 in London

What was the reason for the resignation of Liz Truss, the new UK Prime Minister?

With Liz Truss resigning, what should the Conservatives do?

How did the new government members’ resignation affect Liz Truss’s resignation?

How did Liz Truss’s tax plan affect the UK economy?

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss resigns after only six weeks in No. 10 Downing Street. She said she had informed the king of his intention to resign. Liz Truss left after her economic plan shocked financial markets and split the Conservative Party.

Economic instability caused Liz Truss resigns.

In front of dozens of reporters, Truss said she took power during a time of tremendous economic and international instability. “I recognize, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which the Conservative Party elected me,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Nick Eardley, the BBC’s senior correspondent. “Let’s be clear about what’s happened: yesterday; Truss told us she was a fighter. But the chaos in government and the Conservative Party has brought Liz Truss to the point where she knows she cannot continue.”

Conservatives looking for a new leader

With Liz Truss resigning, the Conservatives are looking for a new leader. Eardley continued: “These are changes that happen at the speed of light.” The question is whether the Conservative Party can agree on new leadership and whether they can do it without a general election.” He clarified: “We are facing an unprecedented situation, with an unprecedentedly short chancellorship, and with a crisis that has never been seen in British politics.”

The resignation of members of the new government

British media have reported that the election to choose the next leader of the Conservative Party will be held next week. Liz Truss will remain Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. The resignation of two cabinet members of the nascent UK government, led by Liz Truss, after the turmoil caused by her tax plans in the country, created a challenging situation for the prime minister and put the newly established government of this country on the brink of collapse.

Chaos in the government of Liz Truss

The resignation of Liz Truss came after chaos in the government. After Truss fired her finance minister some time ago, her Home Secretary also left the cabinet. The chaos in the government cabinet is intensifying, and there are signs of dissolution. Liz Truss resigned during parliamentary questions; Liz Truss responded to opposition calls for her resignation by declaring that she is a fighter, not a slacker.

Suella Braverman’s sudden resignation

That appeared to be the case after the Truss sparked fiscal chaos with planned tax breaks and was forced to do a political U-turn with newly appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt earlier in the week. He calmed down. But a new story quickly emerged: the sudden resignation of Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary. Suella Braverman’s sudden resignation led to Liz Truss’s resignation.

The reason for the resignation of the Home Secretary

The government’s conservative prime minister has lost his second cabinet member in as many days with the likely forced resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman. In her resignation letter, Braverman said she was responsible for sending government documents from a private email account. She wrote: “Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics. I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.”

The failure of the Liz Truss tax plan

The stance was a blow to Truss, who has been criticized for not resigning over the failed tax plan but sacrificing her own Treasury Secretary. But in the second part of the letter, Braverman openly shoots Truss and says: “I have concerns about the direction of this government. Not only have we broken key pledges promised to our voters, but I have also had serious concerns about this government’s commitment to honoring manifesto commitments.” Behind the scenes, Truss and Braverman are said to have disagreed on the immigration issue.

Conservatives decide on future leaders.

However, the bottom line is that the Conservatives must have a plan for who should replace Truss and what procedure will be used to decide this. Calls for early elections are getting louder. Considering that the Labor Party is more than 33% ahead of the Conservatives in the polls, this may not be an option for the Conservatives.

Conservatives strong dissatisfaction with Liz Truss

Truss has only started working since the beginning of September. However, she is already under much pressure. Due to the lack of mutual financing, her tax cut package had led to turmoil in the financial markets and strong discontent in the ruling party’s ranks. The government crisis in London, which began weeks ago, worsened significantly on Wednesday. Things appear to have spiraled out of control after Prime Minister Liz Truss defied questioning in Parliament and refused to resign.

Chaos within the Conservatives

In the conservative wing, the nerves are very frayed. The chaos cast a pathetic light on the Conservative Party and the current government in every sense, Charles Walker, MP for the party, told the BBC. Conservative MP Charles Walker said the situation was a “shambles”. Visibly furious, he told the BBC there was “no coming back” for the government, describing the situation as an “absolute disgrace”. “All those people that put Liz Truss in No 10, I hope it was worth it,” he added.

Possible options for the succession of Liz Truss

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has come under fire for her tax cut plans and the resulting turmoil in financial markets and has recently apologized. Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who lost to Truss in the race to succeed Johnson in the summer, Penny Mordaunt, and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace are also being considered successors to Truss. Jeremy Hunt, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer, has also entered the game.

The intricate tax cuts announced by the Truss government, and uncertain funding, had caused the UK pound to plummet and interest rates to skyrocket. This has led many Conservative Party MPs to conclude that only a complete change of government can end this mess. The Liz Truss resignation has left the Conservatives in a power crisis.
