Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald want to create a united Ireland. Sinn Fein is a national political party in Ireland founded by Arthur Griffith and others in 1902. Its policy involves passive resistance to the British, withholding taxes, and establishing an Irish ruling council.
Ireland was an independent island with its own independent government and culture.
But in 1169, England invaded this country and colonised it. For the next centuries, Irish men and women protested against Britain and demanded independence. They wanted to reclaim their government, culture, and country. Irish men and women wanted to remain independent without another country’s interference.
Between 1916 and 1921, Irish Nationalists held campaigns against Britain and protested against the occupation of their country.
Hence, from the 19th to the 20th century, Britain dominated Ireland with a new definition of democracy. But its real intention was the occupation of this country.
Indeed, creating democracy in this country was Britain’s pretext to cheat it out of its assets for its own benefit. The British Government fostered political division between Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants through a system of political, social, and economic privilege.
The in-built manufactured unionist majority meant continuous government by the Unionist Party. Today the unionist community represents one in five people in the Irish nations. Nationalists do not like living under the domination of Stormont because it is based on discrimination and nationalists are against this type of government and domination.
In 1980, Sinn Fein was a real protester of Britain’s presence in Ireland and it tried very hard to push Britain out of Ireland. It held big campaigns to reach its goal and create national peace in Ireland. It staged different activities to reach its goals, including hunger strikes by republican prisoners in Northern Ireland in 1981.
Sinn Fein Leader for Social Justice
As Sinn Fein leader, Mary Lou McDonald’s most important goal is to create a united, independent country that pays attention to justice. According to her, justice is the first important issue in Northern Ireland to be dealt with. Mary Lou McDonald will be focusing on human rights and equality by injecting her ideas into the new government.
The Sinn Fein leader intends to bring about political, civil, social, economic, and cultural change to shift the balance of power in a changing society.
Her policies include a new roadmap for functioning democratic political institutions which can be successful based on their impact on the lives of the people they serve, focusing on equality, respect, workers’ rights and rights for all. She envisages more security and stability for the country as a whole.
Sinn Fein Leader Will Deliver 20,000 Public Homes Per Year
Sinn Fein has promised to provide 20,000 public homes per year. Its main goal is to tackle rising rents, address housing inadequacy and inequality, fund a substantial Defects Redress Scheme and contribute towards emissions reduction targets.
Teachta O Broin has said: “Sinn Fein has the solutions to tackle the housing crisis. The alternative budget proposals we are launching contain both our budgetary proposals for 2022 and policy initiatives.
“The proposals are made against the backdrop of the number of challenges facing our housing system. These include a chronic lack of secure, adequate, and affordable accommodation for those waiting for social housing and those who want to rent and buy, slowdown of construction due to the closure of building sites last year and earlier this year, significant rise in construction inflation due to Brexit and Covid 19, and the need to meet our legally binding emissions reduction targets following the passing of the Climate Act.
“Our longstanding commitment to deliver 20,000 public homes remains the same. However, the way in which we will deliver these homes has changed significantly to consider these challenges.
“Our budget priorities include:
- More than a doubling of direct capital investment in public housing from the €1.4bn allocated in 2021 to just over € 3bn in 2022
- Providing 20,000 public homes, 12,000 social homes, and 4,000 affordable purchase homes in 2022
- A refundable tax credit putting one month’s rent back into private renters’ pockets at a cost of €273m
- A €200m latent defect redress fund that would provide 100% redress for all homeowners who uncover defects in their homes
- Measures to reduce and end homelessness
- Measures to improve housing standards
- Measures to ensure that new home delivery contributes to the climate emissions reduction targets
“Our proposals are fully costed, and we firmly believe that this is the scale of ambition and investment required to tackle the crisis at hand.”
Sinn Fein Has Promised Big Tax Cuts After its Victory
Sinn Fein has promised billions of euros of tax cuts and a committee to examine a united Ireland in its election manifesto. Mary McDonald has promised to reduce taxes dramatically. USC wants to reduce income tax and increase government revenues in other ways.
Sinn Fein is going to impose extra taxes on the banks and other organizations that have a significant income. The first 30,000 euros someone earns will be exempt from tax. Instead, it wants to tax multinational companies and people who earn more than 100,000 euros.
The Sinn Fein leader has also said meaningful steps towards a United Ireland would be a pre-requisite for them entering government.
Speaking at the party’s manifesto launch today, she said: “I wouldn’t even describe it as a Sinn Fein red line this is an absolute necessity.
“I think whoever is in government, the reality is that change is afoot. Brexit in many respects has accelerated this conversation, and it is irresponsible – in fact, I think it’s reckless at this stage – not to plan.”
Sinn Fein has announced that it is going to reduce taxes on people who earn less than 100,000-euros a month. This reduction will be up to €700 a year. This is a significant sum and the most important decision for this country. The party has also promised to reduce rents by up to €1,500 a year and provide homes for the homeless within a short period of time.
Also, Sinn Fein is going to reduce the pension age to 65.
Moreover, the party has promised to reduce the cost of raising a child by an average of €500 per month per child, as well as extend paid maternity leave to 52 weeks and increase maternity benefits by €50.
In terms of Irish unity, the party says it will publish a white paper on the subject and establish a joint Oireachtas committee to focus on it.
So not only is this party going to create unity, it is also thinking about the people’s welfare and wants them to have the best lifestyle.
